"Art can be everywhere and made from nearly anything." -Steve Zihlavsky

Steve Zihlavsky and Michael Futreal

AUGUST 20 - OCTOBER 5, 2016

Bossier City’s Steve Zihlavsky is a multi-disciplinary artist who believes that “art can be everywhere and made from nearly anything.” His mixed media sculpture-paintings are the result of using, almost exclusively, salvaged materials. Here Zihlavsky wields his scrap-work artistry to open universes full of alien creatures and environments orbiting through the artist’s mind.

Michael Futreal, Shreveport musician and filmmaker, augments Zihlavsky’s visions with animations constructed from his original photographs of Zihlavsky’s works. These are projected in conjunction with an original musical score created using Futreal’s own hand-built electric and acoustic instruments. "Steve's psychedelic works were a perfect inspiration for a new batch of songs and animated films in my ongoing 'rural space music' project," says Futreal. "I really liked the idea of answering his use of recycled supplies with music played on the instruments I build from materials like gourds and reclaimed woods."

This exhibition was supported in part by a grant from the Shreveport Regional Arts Council with funds from the City of Shreveport.
