Nice to Meet Ya!

A two-person introductory exhibition with works by new Art Faculty Shea Hembrey and Meadows Museum of Art Director Heather F. Wetzel

JANUARY 23 - APRIL 18, 2020

Shea Hembrey

New studio art professor Shea Hembrey’s art practice questions reality. Currently, he is beginning an interdisciplinary project on possible unfolding futures. Shown here are selections from two series that explore physics, dark matter, and cosmic structure.

Loop, passage, and route are still life paintings pared down to bits of matter, space, and string (referencing the elemental building blocks of base particles, dark matter, and string theory). They are painted with fine trompe-l'oeil technique to emphasize our continual quest for the real structure of matter. Slowly created, each painting has over 50 layers of black paint. Hembrey spent a month at the Golden Paints factory developing a black paint specifically for this series of paintings.
